ICP Ambassador Talks with H.E. Edoardo Crisafulli: Cultural Diplomacy in a Changing World

On April 10, the CH Maker Space at the ñ (ñ) hosted an engaging session within the ICP Ambassador Talks series titled Cultural Diplomacy. The guest speaker, H.E. Edoardo Crisafulli, Director of the Italian Cultural Institute in Almaty and Cultural Attaché of the Italian Embassy in Kazakhstan, delivered a lecture exploring the growing importance of cultural diplomacy in shaping international relations.

During the talk, H.E. Crisafulli introduced cultural diplomacy as a set of actions based on the exchange of ideas, values, traditions, and other aspects of culture aimed at strengthening relationships and promoting mutual understanding between nations. He emphasized that cultural diplomacy is not limited to governments but also involves the private sector and civil society.

A key focus of the lecture was the concept of “soft power,” developed by Joseph Nye. Unlike “hard power,” which relies on coercion or financial incentives, soft power operates through attraction, persuasion, and cultural influence. The speaker highlighted how countries can use culture, education, and shared values to build a positive global image and foster long-term international partnerships.

The discussion also included real-world examples of soft power in action, illustrating how cultural initiatives and international events contribute to enhancing a country’s global presence, strengthening diplomatic ties, and creating new economic opportunities.

Special attention was given to Italy’s approach to cultural diplomacy. H.E. Crisafulli outlined the role of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in promoting the Italian language and culture abroad through scholarships, educational programs, and the work of Italian Cultural Institutes.

The session concluded with an interactive Q&A, where students engaged in discussions on globalization, intercultural dialogue, and the evolving role of diplomacy in today’s interconnected world. The event provided a valuable platform for students to connect with diplomatic practice and better understand how cultural diplomacy serves as a powerful tool for international cooperation and mutual understanding.
